Penn-Lincoln Hotel
Penn Lincoln Hotel a was the first hotel for travelers along the Lincoln Highway. The Penn-Lincoln hotel was later made into apartments and vacated in 1995.In May 2014, the decision was made to demolish the Penn-Lincoln Hotel due to the non-feasibility of economically rehabilitating the building. The hotel has 150 rooms and is 70,000 sq. I think it should have been knocked down because the building was not being used but I wish they had enough money to fix up the hotel because I think it would have been really cool to have a hotel in Wilkinsburg again.

The PA Railroad Station Wilkinsburg is found on Hay St. at the foot of Ross. The building was completed back in 1916 when the railroad through town was elevated above street level to eliminate any types of grade crossings. Two old stations had been not to far away along Wood St. right between Franklin and Rebecca Aves. My opinion on this is that it seems like it’s been in Wilkinsburg for a very long time and it’s surprising that it hasn’t been taken down or something like that

The station was built out of all brick and all stone in a different art style and also had a tile waiting room with wooden benches. It served three 12-car-length island platforms with enclosed seating areas situated between three pairs of tracks that are main and yard leads. Originally the platform surfaces were level with the floors of the railroad passenger cars, but they were later lowered to the level of the track, reportedly due to substandard lateral clearances between the platforms and carbodies caused by the tracks’ partially curved alignment when lengthier cars came to use. In my opinion this is an important passage because it is talking about all the achievements and accomplishments of the PA Railroad Station built in wilkinsburg on 1916. My idea on what they should do with it is they should probably take it down and build it bigger and better.

The Frick Mansion

The Frick mansion was built by Henry Clay Frick in 1849.Henry and his family lived there in 1883 but then moved to New York in 1900. Their youngest daughter Helen did the best she could to keep up the mansion itself.until she died at the age of 96 rumor has it that the Clay Family haunt the mansion and tourist and guides have experienced footsteps and depressions in the bed where no one was laying.
The reason I was interested in Frick mansion was I heard it was haunted and wanted to learn more about the history that was brought to the building
. I think Wilkinsburg should keep up the mansion just for landmark history and for Ghost adventures to come and check it out.

The Standards of Beauty

In April of 2016, I was asked by WYP to ask close people about how they feel about the standards of beauty. I created a survey and asked my teachers, friends, mentors, and family to complete it. I was curious about this topic because I was wondering how people portray themselves. If many people will think that makeup is just for show or to fit in.  I was curious to see if my thoughts were the same as other people.

After I got my results, my results did connect to other people thoughts. Many people think beauty comes from the inside. They think they should have confidence, a good attitude, and a positive mind. I feel the same way. No woman should feel stressed out because of what someone else said or to fit in. Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Foundation and blush are the two major things I think women should not wear. Foundation is just to make your face lighter, and cover flaws, I think you shouldn’t hide your your actual beauty.  One of the questions was on a scale of one through 10 how worried are you about looking pretty. The results came back and half said they care but they really don’t judge themselves. I personally don’t worry too much about looking pretty. As long as I know I am pretty that is all that matters.

Younger women may say they are wearing makeup just to wear it. But from the survey everyone says they wear it to fit in.  I get it, we are young and we all want to be with the cool kids or they just don’t have confidence in themselves or they don’t want to listen to their moms. But if you don't listen to your moms I feel like you should always listen to a person you look up to. No matter what people say you will always be beautiful in your own way.

Mentoring a Dream

Focused on bettering the youth in Wilkinsburg and enhancing the community from the bottom up, the Wilkinsburg Youth Project Mentoring Team dedicated their time, efforts, and energy to the Performing and Media Arts camp. The camp offers an opportunity to train young people with a special talent in song, dance, or other performance abilities, allowing for the participants to learn and grow in an encouraging and supportive environment. With the help of the WYP Mentoring Team, the young people are encouraged to utilize their time being productive and proactive towards their dreams, motivating children one day at a time, and making dreams come true.
